In a concerning statistic emerging from Malaysia, almost 100,000 individuals succumbed prematurely to various non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in 2022, falling short of the national average life expectancy of 75 years. The primary culprits behind these early deaths were heart and cerebrovascular diseases, along with pneumonia, underscoring a pressing health crisis in the country.
If national policies and long-term plans are done right, the ageing population will be able to stimulate the country’s growth even after they have reached the age of retirement. Thus, both the government and Malaysians need to work together with the same modus operandi for the country’s prosperity and longevity.
A study has shown that Tthe earlier an individual gets was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, the greater the reduction in life expectancy. Every decade of earlier diagnosis was associated with 3 to 4 years of reduced life expectancy. The study, conducted by a team from University of Cambridge and University of Glasgow analyzed data from two large-scale data sources, the Emerging Risk Factors Collaboration and UK Biobank. Data from more than 1.5 million participants were used in this study.
