Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) poses significant health risks for senior citizens, particularly those with weakened immune systems. According to Dr. Rontgene Solante, president of the Philippine College of Physicians, RSV can lead to severe respiratory infections, especially in older adults. During a media panel in Taguig City, he emphasised that one out of three elderly patients hospitalised due to RSV may die within a year after discharge. This alarming statistic underscores the need for increased awareness and preventive measures.

Amidst the convergence of colder months and an uptick in both influenza-like illnesses (ILIs) and anticipated COVID-19 cases, Dr. Rontgene Solante, the President of the Philippine College of Physicians (PCP), shares crucial insights during a bi-monthly lay forum organised by the PCP. 

Recent footage capturing crowded conditions in Beijing hospitals has raised global concern over a surge in respiratory infections in China. The Chinese health ministry, however, attributes this increase to flu and other common winter illnesses, not a novel virus.
