A startling report by the World Health Organization (WHO) has illuminated a critical public health issue: 1.6 million people worldwide suffer from foodborne illnesses every day. This revelation was made during a United Nations press briefing in Geneva, aligning with World Food Safety Day, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of safe food practices.

Known as the King of Fruits due to its unique taste, distinctive smell, and crown-like exterior, durians are known to spark polarising opinions from the masses. The most common point of contention would be its pungent smell, with some who detest durians describing it as “cat poo”. Say what they will, durians are nutritious foods with health benefits, provided they are consumed in moderation.

Health advocates from both the public and private sectors call for improved implementation of the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) in hospitals across the Philippines. The NCP, a standardised approach used by registered nutritionist-dietitians (RNDs), involves thorough evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients’ nutritional needs. This process is crucial for accelerating patient recovery and reducing hospital stays, underscoring that “food is medicine”.

The study utilised data from 115,726 participants enrolled in the Health Examinees (HEXA) study. The study is a component of the larger Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study. It is aimed at exploring the risk factors for chronic diseases among adults over 40 in Korea. Researchers assessed the participants’ dietary intake through a food frequency questionnaire, including their consumption of various types of kimchi. They analysed the relationship between kimchi intake, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference.
