Manila’s city government, under the leadership of Mayor Honey Lacuna, is taking significant steps to improve the health and well-being of its elderly. In her recent State of the City Address on 30th July, Mayor Lacuna highlighted the administration’s commitment to health programmes for 180,000 senior citizens. 

Jakarta, a bustling metropolis marking its 497th anniversary, was overshadowed by a pressing concern: its deteriorating air quality. 

On June 8, 2024, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported a significant rise in sulfur dioxide emissions from Kanlaon Volcano, reaching 4,397 tons per day. This elevated level of emissions signals heightened volcanic activity, necessitating Alert Level 2. This warning highlights potential explosive eruptions and restricts access to the volcano’s 4-kilometer radius.

It is vital for us to be aware of the dangers that come with the haze. We should also be vigilant and safeguard members of our community especially those who are more susceptible to the effects of the haze. While we might not be able to neutralise the factors causing the haze, we can certainly do our part to reduce its effects and keep each other safe.
