Dr Jaime Galvez Tan, former Health Secretary and convener of the HPA, stresses the importance of prioritising heart health through dietary choices. “One way of showing extra love and care for our hearts is to cut down our consumption of Ultra-Processed Products (UPPs) to save ourselves from cardiovascular diseases,” he emphasises. Dr Tan advocates replacing UPPs with healthier alternatives such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and home-cooked meals. These choices provide essential nutrients while reducing the intake of harmful additives.

Dr Goh shared that “The complications from both type 1 and type 2 diabetes have serious complications when they attack blood vessels. When this happens, it can cause microvascular heart diseases and lead to blindness, kidney failure, loss of sensations in the nerve and more. Macrovascular heart disease causes heart attack and stroke.

Type 1 diabetes usually has more complications and has a greater impact on reducing the lifespan. However, in both diseases, the life expectancy is reduced. Therefore, the patient is better off getting a reversal cure via metabolic surgery. 

A recent study shows that delaying sleep by just 90 minutes each night damages blood vessels, contributing to the development of cardiovascular diseases. A study conducted in the University of Columbia recently showed that mild sleep restriction among female individuals causes an increase in oxidative stress in blood vessels. It is the first direct evidence linking mild, chronic sleep deficits to causing heart disease.
