SUNWAY CITY ISKANDAR PUTERI, JOHOR, 18 SEPTEMBER 2026 – Sunway Healthcare Group (SHG) today marked the groundbreaking of Sunway Medical Centre Iskandar Puteri, its first hospital in southern Malaysia and a planned state-of-the-art multi- specialty tertiary hospital with an estimated total capital expenditure of RM800 million.
Located within Sunway City Iskandar Puteri in Johor, Sunway Medical Centre Iskandar Puteri (SMCIP) will have a capacity of more than 400 beds upon its targeted completion in 2030. The hospital is designed to offer a comprehensive range of specialist services, supported by advanced medical technologies and patient-centred treatment facilities. These will include an integrated Cancer and Nuclear Medicine Centre offering radiotherapy and nuclear medicine services.
The hospital will also focus on key specialties such as Cardiovascular, Oncology, Neuroscience, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Orthopaedics, as well as Women and Children’s Health.
Strategically located near the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone and the upcoming Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System Link, the hospital is well positioned to support Johor’s growing population and its development as a regional hub for commerce, industry, healthcare and medical tourism.

SMCIP is expected to employ a workforce of more than 1,400 healthcare professionals upon its targeted completion. The hospital will have more than 45 intensive care beds and over 130 ambulatory care beds, supported by more than 80 consultation suites, 10 operating theatres and two catheterisation laboratories.

Sunway Healthcare Group President Dato’ Lau Beng Long said Sunway Medical Centre Iskandar Puteri will be more than a standalone hospital. As part of the integrated Sunway City Iskandar Puteri township, it will support the health and well-being of surrounding communities.

SMCIP will form part of Sunway City Iskandar Puteri, a vibrant 2,000-acre integrated and vibrant township featuring education, hospitality, entertainment, retail, commercial and residential components. Upon full completion, the township is expected to serve a community of more than 250,000 residents. Sunway City Iskandar Puteri is also one of Johor’s first townships to receive Green Building Index certification, with a Silver rating.
Beyond SMCIP, SHG is also expanding its healthcare presence in Johor through the planned Sunway Fertility Centre at Sunway Citrine, targeted for completion in 2027, andthe Sunway Ambulatory Care Centre near the Johor Bahru–Singapore RTS Link, targeted for completion in 2028. The Group is also exploring potential elder-care facilities.
The township’s next phase of growth includes the recently launched Sunway Puteri Hills, a dining and lifestyle destination overlooking the Straits of Johor, and the upcoming Jeffrey Cheah Circuit, a 4.5-kilometre private, members-only motorsport circuit. Plans also include an educational institution and a leisure and hospitality component expected to feature a Banjaran retreat. Together with the new hospital, these developments will further broaden the township’s residential, education, healthcare, hospitality and leisure offerings.
Following the listing of Sunway Healthcare Holdings Berhad on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad under the stock name SUNMED on 18 March 2026, SHG is advancing its next phase of nationwide growth. SMCIP is one of three planned greenfield hospitals, alongside tertiary hospitals in Seremban Sentral and Putrajaya. By 2032, SHG aims to operate eight hospitals with a combined capacity of more than 3,400 beds across Malaysia.
SHG’s newer hospitals have demonstrated comparatively short ramp-up periods. Sunway Medical Centre Velocity, Sunway Medical Centre Penang and Sunway Medical Centre Damansara achieved their first EBITDA-positive months within 12, three and nine months of opening respectively, compared with the Malaysian private hospital industry’s typical ramp-up period of approximately three to five years.
Building on this track record, SHG targets its future greenfield hospitals to achieve their first EBITDA-positive month within 12 to 18 months of opening. As these hospitals build capacity, expand their clinical services and grow patient volumes, they are expected to broaden SHG’s revenue base and contribute progressively to earnings.
The Group’s latest results also reflect the growing contribution of its newer hospitals. In the second quarter of the financial year ending 31 December 2026, SHG’s revenue rose 30% year-on-year to RM672.9 million, while profit attributable to owners increased 89% to RM78.2 million. Sunway Medical Centre Damansara and Sunway Medical Centre Ipoh progressed further into positive EBITDA contribution, with their combined contribution to Group revenue increasing to 11% from 5% a year earlier.
